Osamu Moriya | Manga Artist Interview

Osamu Moriya | manga artist interview

In this month’s Artist interview, we asked Osamu Moriya – the author of the manga full of desires and piquant scenes called “The Man Who Shattered My World” – about their path as a BL manga artist, the process of manga-making, and inspiration tips!😊

“I love to paint!”, “I want to be good at drawing!”… When did you first feel that? How did it all start?

It seems that the first time I felt something like this more acutely was when I was deciding on my university career path.

What was the first character you drew?

To be honest, I can’t remember. But since I liked reading shojo manga, I think it was some shojo manga character I was a fan of.

When did you feel the urge to draw BL manga?

When I became a middle school student. I was probably around 12 years old.

Is your manga usually born from the story?
Or do characters come to your mind first?

A story usually comes to my mind first.

What is the most challenging part when creating manga?

Each process always feels pretty hard.

What parts are you most particular about when creating characters?

I would say it’s the characters’ faces and expressions.

Where do you get inspiration from?

Solutions often pop up in my head while taking a bath (it’s said that hot water is pretty good for the blood vessels in the brain).

What works have you read/watched/listened to recently that have left a deep impression on you?

It’s a movie called “The Queen’s Gambit”.

Out of all BL character types, what is your favorite one?

I really like a character with a nasty and sadistic personality.

What is your favorite couple pairing in BL?

I like same-age couples. Even if there is a difference in age, I would prefer a couple with an equal relationship, where partners can rely on each other.

As a reader, what are your favorite story settings?

I like hard-boiled stories.

What do you think about the rising popularity of BL outside Japan?

I want to purely enjoy it.

Please leave a message to your fans.

Though I’m a novice, I would genuinely appreciate your support.
